This week’s Junior Church!

Sunday 5th April 2020

THE BEST FRIEND EVER!

Aim:

To help us discover how great a friend Jesus is and how we can be a great
friend to others too.

INTRO QUESTIONS:

  1. Who is your best friend?
  2. What qualities do they have?

Songs (words are at the bottom of the page):

I’m a friend of God (WeAreWorship)

My BFF (LifeKids)

Games:

  1. FISHING FOR FRIENDS.
You’ll need a tub or paddling pool and some ‘fish’ (small items that float and that you can write on e.g. pegs / leaves.) Write the name of a friend or family member on each ‘fish’. Fill a tub of water or paddling pool. Use their feet to fish out the friends. See how many friends you can ‘rescue’ in a minute or two. Have fun!
  2. GUESS WHO.
One person must choose a famous person or character and everyone else can ask questions to work out who this person is. You can limit the number of questions to make it more difficult.

Story:

Our Bible story today comes from Matthew 26:17-30. Read it from the
Bible or watch the little video:

We take communion at church or at home as a way to remember Jesus’ last supper and his words to the disciples. He asks us to do this to remember him.

Think and Do:

Friend or Foe

See the download (PDF) here.

There is no better friend than Jesus! He is the friend that always gives, always loves and always cares. Sometimes even our best friends can let us down, do wrong or think about themselves first. Yet Jesus never does, but he also had a friend who let him down. Judas was the friend that turned against Jesus. If we’re honest, his actions were like those of an enemy or foe. Yet Jesus shows us what a true friend is. He showed the disciples that he cared about them, even Judas. Jesus is the best friend ever because He is always there for us, no matter what. He always puts His friends before His own needs and cares for them. No matter what we are going through or where we are, we can always turn to Jesus. We can always talk to Him. He will always listen and always be there for us. We can always say sorry when we’re not a good friend and He will forgive us. That’s because He is the best friend ever.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  1. What makes a great friend?
  2. How are you a good friend?
  3. How can you be a good friend whilst self-isolating?
  4. Who has been a good friend to you?
  5. Who has been a good friend to you whilst self-isolating?
  6. Why is Jesus the greatest friend we can have?
  7. How was Jesus a friend to the disciples?
  8. How is Jesus your friend?

As you and the kiddies think and talk about these questions, do one or more of the
activities below:

  1. Craft: Create a paper chain of little people interlinked (See the download (PDF) here.),
colour them in and give them names of all your friends. Put them up somewhere to help you think of them while you’re all apart and maybe pray for them each day through the week.
  2. Mould: a play dough or salt dough person.
  3. Lego: Make the last supper scene out of Lego.
  4. Serve: You could share a ‘last supper’ meal together by passing around the bread and the juice and thanking Jesus for all He has done on the cross.
  5. Fill in/colour the activity sheets. (See the download (PDF) here.)

PRAY:

Thank You Jesus that You truly are the greatest friend. Thank You that we can know You as our friend. Help me to be a good friend in this strange season. I want to be more like You. Amen.

SALT DOUGH RECIPE:

1 Cup Flour* 1⁄2 Cup Salt*
1 Tablespoon Oil
Water
Food colouring (if you want)
Mix together flour, salt, oil, food colouring, then add a little cold water at a time and knead until it is the consistency of playdough. Add a little more flour if it becomes too wet. Leave to dry over a couple of days or put it in a very low oven (100 degrees or less) for 2-3 hours.
*(flour:salt ratio = 2:1)

SONG WORDS:

I’m a friend of God (WeAreWorship)

Who am I that you are mindful of me
that you hear me when I call
Is it true that you are thinking of me
How you love me, it’s amazing

I’m a friend of God
I’m a friend of God
I’m a friend of God
He calls me friend

God almighty, Lord of Glory
You have called me friend

MyBFF (LifeKids)

My Jesus knows my name
When I’m sleeping or awake
No matter what I do
He’ll never leave, His words are true
I tell Him what I love
I tell Him when I am scared
I tell him everything
Jesus is always there.

I’m spinning round, I’m running free
I’m having fun, yeah with my King
No one is like you, Jesus
No one like you!
On really bad days You are strong
And when it’s good You laugh along
My best friend, my BFF
Jesus that’s you!

Best Friends Forever, BFF
Best Friends Forever, BFF
My best friend, my BFF
That’s you!
